2022.01.18 13:30 Hiddenkaos Trench Ideas

So I have a few ideas, but I decided to break them up into a few posts rather than create the great wall of posts by adding them all in one. (This post just covers trenches and it's this long so I hope you understand why I'd split the sections.)
This post is about trenches and ideas to make them more useful. Maybe they are all horrible, but better to have them out there than not.

Trench Upgrades - Trenches are currently a massive double-edged necessity. Just some ideas to potentially help them/make them more engaging. Probably the single biggest hit against the current trench system is it's a two-way situation. any trench one army can dig the other can easily use just as well. Finding ways to fix that would be paramount to any significant changes.

  1. Directional Trenches - One solution would be trenches with directional structures. IE it's deeper on one side than the other, making it so that it can only be shot out of from one side, not both. (https://i.imgur.com/6dzWsfx.jpg) This would help trenches be less of a liability for defensive purposes, while still allowing for better cover. (alternatively would be variable trench depths, but that needs its own entry. Of course, both together would be even better.)
  2. Variable Trench Depths - Speaking of. This may or may not be feasible in the current engine, but ideally, this would mean trenches that could be dug at 3 depths(with dig time adjusted to compensate for each depth) 1m, 2m, and 3m, respectively. Perhaps using a key to adjust the depth before starting to dig or when modifying a trench.
    1. The 1m deep trench would only provide partial cover while crouched and only full cover while prone. It would also be more vulnerable to mortar and artillery fire. Could be useful as player-manned LMG nests. These could also be combined with the 3m wide trench(see below) or octagonal trench to create modest defensive emplacements for field guns.     2. The 2m deep trench would functionally be the same as the one currently in the game.
    3. The 3m deep Trench would be deep and better protected from artillery and mortar fire but at the expense of visibility and the need for addons to shoot from(such as platforms to step up on https://i.imgur.com/FrF0xV6.jpg)
  3. Variable Trench Widths - In the same vein as depth modifications would be width modifications. Allowing trenches to be 3 variable widths,(1m, 2m, and 3m) with dig times adjusted based on width.
    1. The 1m wide trench would be just big enough for two players to pass by each other, but would not allow space for guns to be manned and still be passed by. Would be quicker to dig and useful for creating paths forward to enemy lines, but not ideal for major defensives. It also wouldn't support any interior upgrades(see below)
    2. The 2m wide trench would be basically the same as the one in the game now.
    3. The 3m wide trench would be larger and could allow for light vehicles, some gun emplacements, and even artillery to sit down in the cover via a larger end ramp. it would of course also be a bigger target for enemy fire. It would also create space for mortar squads to fire from some safety.
    4. Subidea would also allow you to build storage boxes directly in trench lines, for artillery shells or general use.
  4. Interior Trench Walls/Cover - Similar to the wall upgrades for bunkers, creating cover inside trenches could create a more dynamic place to fight in. Walls, boxes, just something to break up lines of sight. This could also theoretically help the shotguns as it would create a more practical setting for them as opposed to long open spaces.
  5. Infantry Trench Bridges - Basically smaller variants of the bridge currently in the game, that won't allow vehicles but will allow troops to cross over heavily reinforced areas with barbed wire or sandbags, while also providing some cover in the immediate area below the bridge.(https://i.imgur.com/nFYLpP6.jpg)
  6. New Vehicle: Backhoe - In case you don't know what a backhoe is:(https://i.imgur.com/rPeTn1z.jpg). In short a useful vehicle for digging not just trenches, but also bunkers in general. It could be used to rapidly create level one trenches and bunkers, at the cost of some fuel and of course being very vulnerable to enemy fire. This would also play a role in other idea areas I have( Such as player-made paths to allow for more Base locations.)
  7. Other trench ideas -
    1. Trench Connector Upgrades/Overhaul - I understand that the concept of a trench connector is to, well, connect. That said, due to the limitations of the game world, I would pose that it needs to be changed to allow for endpoint upgrades(like barb, sandbags, and ramps) provided the end opening is large enough to accommodate such upgrades. Often trench "connectors" are being used simply because the standard trench cant curve or they won't fit in an area, not because there is a planned connection to be made.
    2. More Shapes - On the note of this, having more variety in shapes for trench building would significantly change how bases can be set up, allowing for more versatility, especially in awkward areas such as cities or shorelines.
  8. Other Notes and Ideas - Finally, this section is just for ideas that would help trenches but are not directly trench-related.
    1. Volumetric Gas - Essentially, gas landing in a trench, crater, or building shouldn't be spreading out equally in all directions from that point. Gas being just a big circle of death regardless of obstacles is not only horribly immersion breaking, but also makes many defenses useless since even a rough area throw can wipe out an entire area of multiple lines of trenches. This one might be an engine limitation though.

Anyway, those are all my ideas for trenches that I think could help change the current trench system into a more dynamic and less problematic defensive structure.
