2022.01.18 13:13 lincolnjkc More (default gateways) is not always better
This happened a while ago but it's still something I should be a bit vague about even if an NDA isn't involved.
I work in a relatively niche industry within a niche. I also seem to be one of the few that has a reasonable grasp on both my industry and networking in general.
We had provided a quote for a project to provide our services to a project a couple years ago to the company that was actually providing and installing the hardware side of the equation. For various reasons they decided to do it in house instead (but never communicated that, no I'm not a jilted lover)
About 6 months after they "finished" the actual end user brought us into a conference call -- apparently they've been having stability issues ever since. Suppress my "I told you so" urge and smirk. The other company swears they can fix it, a fix is on the way, etc., etc., etc. Mmm hmm. OK.
Nearly a year later the end user has had enough and fly us out to do a survey, audit and report.
First thing I notice: The log has several million entries of "warning" or higher severity over the past two weeks. In a well behaved system where the configuration is unchanged there might be a handful of "notice"s and maybe 1 or 2 "warnings" over the course of a month. Hmmm
Second thing I notice: The IP connection between "my" devices use to exchange data amongst themselves is going up and down faster than a champion yo-yo, like "I didn't know a connection could get negotiated to the state of being considered 'up' and then F-ed up enough that it could be considered 'down' that quickly"
That's all...odd...but I'm not putting my finger on it.
Then I pull the network configuration. Ok. There are three NICs in play; not entirely uncommon with my devices needing to talk to things on otherwise isolated/landlocked single-subnet networks. But...wait... all three have a default gateway defined?! WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS?
I suppose an additional bit of information comes into play here: Based on the architecture of my devices the actual brain that generates and receives packets is behind an internal router (I use the term with velociraptor air quotes) that then sees the external ethernet interfaces. As a result the primary OS doesn't really have any routing intelligence and as far as it knows virtually all packets are destined to or originate from foreign networks, even if the 'foreign' network is physically connected to the device.
Anyway...with a little probing I figure out that one of the three doesn't exist, one doesn't have an actual route off the subnet, and one actually has routes to remote subnets that I care about(tm).
Remove the interlopers, watch things: all of my connections come up, stay up, and months later the client is happy. Meanwhile, the "I dunna know, the IP info they gave me had a default gateway listed so I just put that in the device configuration" continues to be a plague on my industry.
So near as I can tell with the extra default gateways the internal 'router' just choosing an interface at random to fling packets out of. Sometimes it flung them out the correct interface long enough to get a connection up... The rest of the time it just dropped them into the void.
And I've since come to really respect (some) of Cisco's stuff referring to it as the "gateway of last resort" -- seems to much more clearly convey the purpose. Though I guess that still requires a basic understanding of IP routing....Sigh.

2022.01.18 13:13 ProfessorEkim Amazon to See Competition with JD-Shopify Alliance - Could Improve Access to China's Imports/Exports
According to an article by TechCrunch, Chinese import company JD.com is partnering with Shopify.com to provide a more more accessible import/export market. This will provide competition for the market largely dominated by Alibaba.com and Amazon.com, both who've maintained a nearly monopoly in the industry for Chinese exports.
JD will provide better marketing for brands along with supplier sourcing called JD sourcing. This will provide sellers with a convenient way of drop shipping good through the Shopify platform.
This alliance will provide much needed competition in the market, and will give online sellers and buyers more options when choosing which companies to support. It should also keep monopolies such as Amazon.com in line by providing a much needed alternative.

2022.01.18 13:13 ejm554 Is there a `/fill ... hollow` command that will work on a single layer?
I'd like to use a single command to create a single layer of blocks that is hollow on the inside, similar to a wall/fence/boundary. (In my case, however, I'm using more complicated blocks, such as glass panes.)
As far as I can tell, this isn't possible using the standard
/fill command, since the
outline arguments only apply to volumes that are three or more layers thick.
One alternative that I've come up with is to use a regular fill of the entire area, followed by an additional fill with air on the inside. This additional step is slowing down my build process though, especially since I'm building with blocks that, when multiplied, can cause a lot of lag.
Is there another command that I can use to do what I want, or a way to get /fill to work the way I want it to?
One idea I have is to create a function that will programmatically perform the two fill commands I'm currently doing manually, i.e., fill all blocks, followed by filling the interior with air. I'm not sure off the top of my head to do this.

2022.01.18 13:13 D_J-ANGO I'm going to start gardening because of this sub
I'm starting a garden because of this sub. I'm currently boycotting Kroger stores which is where I mainly shopped. I buy very few groceries from Walmart. At this point, I want to give these shitty companies as little money as possible.
Food prices are also kind of nuts. I'm attempting to eat healthier now that I have a son. I don't like a ton of raw veggies, but I do like peppers. It's $1.38 plus tax for a pepper here (Kansas still has full tax on groceries).
It's also going to be a small piece of my fallback plan. If I get fired or laid off, I won't have to worry about food for my family as much.
Starting a garden seems like one of the most antiwork things we can do right now (when the season is right obviously).

2022.01.18 13:13 Havanese_puppy Paying 6 months upfront is referencing only for 6 months?
Me and my partner have had our offer accepted for a 12 month fixed tenancy and we are paying six months upfront
does anyone know if the referencing check would be if we can afford six months or 12 months?
I am self-employed with no accounts until April…we can easily afford the flat on my earnings alone but my earnings don’t count and my partner has just started his job so I’m worried we will fail referencing and lose our deposit.

2022.01.18 13:13 evedamnededen Eating disorder resources for someone with type 2 diabetes
Hi. I have recently been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I have been chronically dieting since I was 6 years old. (I was a chubby child, a very thin teenager with body dysmorphia, then normal weight from 18-22, then gained 100lbs between 23 and 35. I am 36 now and I lost 20lbs, but found out it was because of the type 2 diabetes.
I have been on every diet, including keto and low carb, plant based, etc. and I am pretty upset because I thought I was doing everything I could to prevent type 2 diabetes, but I learned that I accelerated it from constantly losing weight and gaining it back. I have a very long history of restriction and bingeing patterns.
I had to a of medical professionals tell me no more keto, but then proceed to give me diet advice that is almost like keto anyway. I see a dietitian next month, but I am trying to find additional resources now so that I won’t binge.
Substituting foods is a major binging trigger. For example frozen banana pretending to be ice cream or zucchini noodles pretending to be rice noodles. I also need my ethnic foods. White washed diet versions won’t cut it because they will cause me to binge.
I go to therapy for this and everything. But I still hate my life because I am not allowed to enjoy food anymore.
The worst part is that my favorite dessert in the whole world, bubble milk tea, is completely off limits and every single article I read about how to drink bubble tea says I can still enjoy it without the tapioca (which are the bubbles and the main point of the drink) and without sugar, but then that is just a tea latte and not the same thing.
I got my sugars under control and I no longer take insulin. I still take metformin and ozempic. But I am miserable. I think about food that I miss constantly, and I am worried that I will binge.

2022.01.18 13:13 squirrelacronparty Can something be done with this church-like look?
My husband and I have been looking for a mid-century modern house, and this came up on the market this morning.
He absolutely hates the church look lol otherwise for me it checks all the boxes(schools, proximity to other things etc). Also the ranch part of the house has some mid century modern look and feel, so it's really that church feel that bothers him.
Any way to change it somehow it's less church-like and more MCM?

2022.01.18 13:13 SeraphsEnvy How do I make my store-bought refrigerated flour tortillas soft on a stovetop?
Every time I try heating my flour tortillas on a pan, I end up with these stiff, crackly tortillas, that are closer to tostadas than the taco-truck tortillas I love. Is there some secret (besides making my own) to making my store-bought, refrigerated flour tortillas soft on a stovetop pan?
When I make them, I obviously separate them, while my pan is heating up to medium-high. Then I toss the tortilla on the pan for a while until it goes from a creamy-yellow color to more of a creamy-white color. At that point I flip it over and check if it has brown spots. At this point, my tortilla begins to "inflate" and I have to flatten it with a turner. A lot. Then I flip it a few more times to try and make it even on both sides. Then I toss it in between some papertowels because I read somewhere that helps(?) but it never does. I end up with very crispy, unfoldable, brown circles.
What am I doing wrong?
